In what is just a 12-team tournament for the women’s game at this summer’s Olympics, there are very few mis-matches and this is certainly one that should excite the neutral as Germany take on Australia. The Germans, still reeling from their group stage exit at the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup, will be looking to make amends on the global stage, whilst Australia, albeit now with key player and captain Sam Kerr, have finished fourth in both the last Olympic games and the aforementioned FIFA Women’s World Cup. These are two of the stronger sides in the competition still reliant on ageing forwards in Alexandra Popp and Caitlin Foord so a low-scoring and cagey affair is to be expected.
