FPL 2024-25 – Captain tips for Gameweek 9
Oct 24, 2024 published
Following the last round of Premier League fixtures and another set of European games, all eyes turn once again to the English top flight and an exciting cluster of matches. Most will be focused on the big showdown at Anfield that sees Liverpool host Arsenal, whilst reigning champions Man City will look to take advantage by beating lowly Southampton. In-form Spurs travel to Crystal Palace in a London derby and West Ham host Man Utd.
FPL managers once again must select wisely when it comes to picking a Gameweek 9 captain and we’re on hand to help with a rundown of some of the most attractive choices.
Erling Haaland (£15.4m) vs SOU (H)
If ever there was a fixture for a forward to get back to his best, it would be Southampton at home. Haaland has not found the net in each of his last three Premier League games. But after scoring two in the Champions League midweek, it would be a huge shock if he didn’t get on the scoresheet at least once for Man City in Gameweek 9. It goes without saying that he’ll be the most captained FPL asset by a massive margin.
Cole Palmer (£10.9m) vs NEW (H)
Haaland was the only premium FPL asset who blanked last weekend as Cole Palmer also failed to register an attacking return. Despite that, the England international still boasts 41 points across the last four gameweeks and in Gameweek 9, his Chelsea side takes on Newcastle at Stamford Bridge, the Magpies having recorded just two clean sheets all season. All signs are pointing towards another big Palmer return.
Ollie Watkins (£9.1m) vs BOU (H)
After starting on the bench in Aston Villa’s most recent Champions League game, you would expect Watkins to slot straight back into the starting line-up here against Bournemouth. Since the start of Gameweek 3, Watkins has racked up five goals, two assists and 45 FPL points, blanking in just one of those gameweeks. The best way to capitalise on Watkins’ recent good form, is to captain him in Gameweek 9.
Danny Welbeck (£5.9m) vs WOL (H)
Although there is a question mark regarding his injury status, should Danny Welbeck be fit to play for Brighton then it would be no surprise to see him add to his goal tally this season against struggling Wolves. Welbeck has scored in three of the last four gameweeks and his 50 FPL points is second only to Haaland among forwards.
