Poland endured a very difficult qualifying campaign, which led to Fernando Santos being sacked by Michal Probierz, and Poland needed to go through the playoffs with a penalty shootout victory against Wales in the final in Cardiff. However, they showed signs of togetherness in their 2-1 defeat to the Netherlands on Sunday in a game in which they surprisingly went ahead. The Austrians, pre-tournament ‘dark horses’, played a typically intense and aggressive pressing game against the French in their opener but a lack of cutting edge in the final third contributed to them going down 1-0. Austria are the better of these two sides, despite Poland’s surprising competence, and they should come out on top.
