Portugal endured something of an inconsistent and mixed group stage campaign. One of the pre-tournament favourites began by needing to come from behind against Czechia and scoring a second-half stoppage-time winner. They then hammered Turkey by three goals to nil with an impressive performance before a heavily rotated Portuguese side suffered a 2-0 loss to Georgia in Gelsenkirchen. Slovenia managed to secure a goalless draw against an underwhelming England side and that means they manage to squeeze through as one of the four best third placed teams with three draws from three. Slovenia defeated Portugal by two goals to nil in a friendly in March and will be an extremely stubborn test for Roberto Martinez’ men but a low-scoring Portugal win remains likely.
